Very illustrative.

Gotta agree. I spent a long time defending Lucas. Afterall, he took the majority of the money made from Star Wars and dumped it into ILM. He did the same with ESB and ROTJ. He has continually pushed for better technology in cinema to not only tell the story, but in appreciating it (ie. digital projection, THX, etc.) His contributions to the development of cinema cannot be overstated. I won't say that without him, we wouldn't have T2, LOTR, etc, as assuredly, someone would have come along eventually.

But I don't believe Lucas is to blame for the overuse of CGI, simply because he invested in it initially. I do agree the second trilogy (first?) was worse due to its heavy reliance on CG. But everyone overuses it unfortunately; using it as a crutch, as opposed to good story or limited use in the proper context.

With all that said, he is a cash whore. How many versions of the original trilogy are there?

1. Original P&S VHS
2. Original widescreen VHS
3. "Updated" P&S VHS
4. "Updated widescreen VHS
5. "Updated V2" fullscreen DVD
6. "Updated V2" widescreen DVD
7. non-animorphic widescreen original trilogy DVD

And Roddenberry's estate is even worse. Oh well, what can you do?

I watched the movies again recently in HD. Jesus it annoys me so much how he fucked up the films. If you watch the last film, its completely baffling why no one at one point didn't say "look Lucas this transformation of Anakin to the dark side is just fucking stupid. It's not dramatically in anyway comprehensible nor realistic"

I agree 100% with this photo - The first trilogy used technology without showboating. The new trilogy felt more like a showcase for the new technology!

I missed the latex and animatronics, I missed the Yoda puppet, I missed the Jabba puppet. I missed all the wonderful possibilities that modern technology could have done to the model making and creature creation.

I think the dogfights were much more interesting in the new trilogy but that just made them spend too much time on them showing us all the wonderful things they could do. Episode One should have been called "Star Wars: Podracing!"

My biggest disappointment on Jedi was the replacement of Anakin in the last ghost scene. He was old when he died, why would they replace him with the young ghost - should have left it alone!!!!!!

...Not to mention the whole Han shot first thing!

I wish he'd release the original trilogy without all the special edition enhancements in HD and be done with it.

Oh don't worry, eventually he'll run out of updates and start working backwards....

He'll do that in the run up to Episode 7.

(You didn't really believe that tripe about how he was done with Star Wars, did you?)

Indeed I have been waiting for the originals in HD for a while. Updates to the originals are teh suck. Being a computer nerd, it's easy for me to spot CGI in film and the original star wars movies (updated) were well done for their time, but they still are lackluster and make me feel like im watching a cartoon.

My worst culprit? The Sarlacc pit: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/36/BaradaandSarlaac.jpg

It's supposed to digest you over a period of 7,000 years, so it was a hole in the ground with a low metabolism, makes sense. The image and video above make it seem like the plant from Little Shop of Horrors (only the LSOH plant seemed real in comparison).

Great effects do not a compelling story make.
