It Puts the Blog on the Sift or Else It Gets the Hose Again

Wired.com writes about this new $200 PC running the Enlightenment desktop manager on Ubuntu Linux and powered by a 1.5 Ghz VIA C7 CPU, 512 megs of RAM, and an 80GB drive.

Ubuntu Linux is a very powerful, robust operating system derived from Debian (which is what runs VideoSift). This could be the first big step toward Linux PCs taking over... Okay, so they probably won't take over, but at least they'll become more popular and offer lots more people an affordable computer.

It'd actually be a box very worth buying for simple things such as a development/test server, data backup, or other such tasks.

Here is the item page at WalMart.com, and below are the item description and not-so-detailed specs from that page:

Shit, the hardware alone is worth that money. Now I can have my own TF2 server!

That is so cheap! And the money I saved on zombie duds I could throw in a nifty fuzzy mouse cover or something

What's bizarre is they also offer a comparable model with a monitor, writable DVD drive, AND Windows Vista Basic for only 100 bucks more. I'd take that one and install Ubuntu myself. You could even run Vista in a virtual machine, should you ever actually need it. (Probably not)

But what I don't get is this: Who is Wal-Mart targeting with this? I mean, it's not like your usual Ubuntu user has to rely on Wal-Mart for his hardware...

Sure they could. Ubuntu was designed for the "grandma factor." You're thinking in terms of the stereotypical uber-1337 Linux user. In fact, I think my mom oughta get one of these.

It'd be cool if you could rent/try one of these suckers...then they'd just reimage the drive when returned. Too many civilians have an irrational fear of other OS's.

Great point about the next level machine karaidl, too bad about paying the MS tax for nothing.
