YouTube now allows for a 2GB upload and also enabled HD embeds...pretty sweet...now we just need to allow for these larger embeds here on the sift.

Well, this sucks...
posted by gwiz665 1 day 11 hours 59 minutes ago • 149 views

Due to personal reasons, peggedbea had to leave for a while, which means that I'm sitting in the airport now, and have to bitch and moan to lufthansa to get me home 5 days early.

There wouldn't happen to be anyone near DFW who can house a poor Dane until the 7th?

Lufthansa only have office hours in ~2 hours, so I'm just sitting around now.

Change is Coming to VideoSift
posted by dag 1 day 23 hours 46 minutes ago • 199 views
I recognise that humans don't like change as a general rule. It definitely holds true for me. The pathways in my gray matter are deeply etched, why would I want to un-etch them?

I have a particular way that I use VideoSift too- I bookmark most of the pages I frequent and go directly there.

In the next few weeks some significant changes will be brought in with 4.0. Although they may make VideoSift look pretty different from the community you love - I hope you'll give them a chance - and let new interesting grooves form in your brain. As I've always said VideoSift is about the people - and that's not changing.

We'll be taking feedback from testers and then everyone else after the general release. This community will continue to evolve and change with everyone's input and creative juices. I love that everyone who has ever worked on this site has bubbled up from the community - and that's no different for 4.0. It's going to be great.

You're in a swamp
posted by blankfist 2 days 19 hours 56 minutes ago • 134 views

Okay, so I went for a walk and promised myself I'd post this on my Sift blog. As I was walking past a man who A) appeared normal in all regards and B) also appeared to be chatting with "someone" in a car (though I could not tell if that someone actually existed in our reality), the portion of the conversation (or possibly the monologue) I heard was worth repeating here.

This is what I think I heard...

"You're in the swamp. You're trying to get out, but you're in the swamp. You can't get out of the swamp. You can try, but it's a swamp. I mean, 1) [long pause] you're in the swamp."

After that the traffic drowned him out. I wanted to know what point number 2) was going to be. Whether this guy was talking to someone in that car or not, he has a thing for swamps.

Lightning in My Backyard!
posted by dotdude 3 days 5 hours ago • 90 views

Yesterday afternoon I drove home during a thunderstorm that included lots of lightning. When I got inside my answering machine was dead, florescent bulb in the bathroom was dead and my modem had trouble finding the Internet. I had to replace all three.

This morning my neighbor called to let me know lightning struck the tree behind my house and that bark went flying. And so, without further ado, I give you a couple of photos.

Looks lke a feline made the tree a scratching post.

Why they should not doll up Michael Jackson for public viewing
posted by JiggaJonson 3 days 7 hours 48 minutes ago • 105 views

I imagine they are going to put him in the casket with wig on and donning a Sargent Pepper suit but I personally think they should do something a little more traditional.  It's the guy's funeral after all, give him one opportunity to be normal. He spent so much of his life being exploited that it's easy to forget that undernieth it all he was a real person.  The whole situation reminds me of the painting Marge Simpson made of Mr. Burns.

Mr Burns Painting

Behind Michael Jackson's fame, behind his bizzare childhood, the memories we all have of growing up with him, the makeup, the scandals, his children, the plastic surgery, and after 50 years of life, there was nothing left but a frail man.  His death, because he was almost a representation of the good and bad in all of us, made a lot of people reflect on their own lives.  And looking back at the rollercoaster he lived on, it's no wonder he turned out the way he did.

TRANSLATED VERSION

is great and I wanted to update you. I might be a little drunk in which case I'll update this later. In fact, I can already see the spelling errors and I'll keep them for good measure. My flight window got delayed for a fucking month. I won't be deploying to Iraq until July 23rd. That's why I'm still hanging around.

[Now that I'm sober]

Holy shit. I didn't start drinking until ~ 11:30 last night. I had to report in at 8. Thankfully, since there's only a few of us waiting to fly out (since the rest of the battalion is gone) we don't. do. anything. Seriously. We check in at 8. We're told to do a police call (pick up trash in the area) and then we go back at 1300 (1:00) where we're told to come back at 8:00. Seriously, that's the routine we've had for over a month and will have for another month.

So anyway, we got shit-faced and watched movies until about 4 something in the morning, so when formation came around this morning I was most certainly still drunk. Now that it's 1:30 in the workday, I'm finally waking up (didn't have to check in - we were just told to clean our rooms for some Colonel's inspection) I thought I should post more details.

We were supposed to take a civilian flight, but since there's one more battalion of Marines flying out, they decided to stick us with them later. Which is really fine by me - it's one less month in the hot season and one more in the cold season. As as Farhad can tell you, the heat in that region is no fucking joke.

2 Weeks No Smoking
posted by rottenseed 3 days 10 hours 19 minutes ago • 100 views

...and off the Chantix.

I actually stopped taking it about a week ago.  I didn't like the effects and I felt like it had already helped me get over the hump.  Now, I barely even think about smoking.  I even go outside and hang out with the smokers with no urge to partake.  I got wasted this weekend...still no smoking.  It's like I was never a smoker at all.  I personally think that the recommended 3 months on Chantix is overkill, considering I didn't even use up 2 weeks of my 1 month supply.  My girlfriend has quit now too .  She's gonna cold turkey it though since she was only doing 4 or 5 cigs a day.

So would I recommend Chantix? Yes I would.  But I'd be careful to listen to my body.  If the effects are negative, and you don't feel like you need to take it, then stop taking it.

Mail Traffic
posted by dag 3 days 17 hours 52 minutes ago • 107 views
Website traffic reading is fun and sometimes mysterious. Today alone, this post - received over 10K visits- but when I look at the sources of the traffic - it all looks like this:

mail.google.com
webmail.aol.com
facebook.com
us.mg2.mail.yahoo.com
us.mg4.mail.yahoo.com
us.mg201.mail.yahoo.com
webmail.att.net
co117w.col117.mail.live.com

Or, it shows in Google Analytics as "direct" traffic - which just means that it can't tell where it comes from.

My deduction is that it's from one of those mass forwarded email chains - and the "direct" would be from non-web mail clients like Outlook that don't supply a referrer.

For the month, this page alone has done 70k+ pageviews.

But it doesn't compare to this post which has done 94K pageviews for the month and has similar mail client source page stats.

Has anyone received one of these - what I can only assume are mass chain emails with VideoSift content? If so please let me know - I'd be curious to see what it's about.

We shopped at khoks, or something like that.. boy, do I like khoks. Hmmm... maybe it was khols..

BIllie Tweets: Interesting YouTube and Twitter Mashup

Check out http://billietweets.com. It plays the Billie Jean music video from YouTube on the left and on the right it's *sort of* closed captioned. It displays each word from the song as it's sung but it displays each word from a different new Tweet just posted.

You can do a lot of neat stuff with Twitter.

i would like to go back in time and be your wife
posted by peggedbea 4 days 17 hours 8 minutes ago • 117 views

fuck the civil war. but abraham lincoln is a regular fox. i have a giant crush on him.  i may have developed a thing for boys with marfans and beards. heres a song i will share with you instead of continuing on the dread path  homework.

Abraham Lincoln, i would like
to go back in time and be your wife
not because id be the first lady
but because i think youre charming

i know you were an unhappy man
few marry old they say
but i could have made you a happy man
that laughed and danced and sang

and i
would have recited Shakespeare with you
let you read all the good lines
you couldve been Iago and Othello
every time
i would have done your shopping for you
bought you your tall pants
i wouldve been presently affectionate
i wouldve put my hand in your long hand

and if id been on the balcony of Fords Theater
when Mr. Booth came up with gun in hand
i wouldve put my head in front of your head
wouldve put my head in front of your head

Abraham Lincoln
i would like
to go back in time and be your wife
not because you saved the Union
but because i think youre hot shit

i know you were intelligent
telling stories all the time
and i bet wed have the same sense of humor
wed laugh until we cried

and i
would have spent hours combing your hair
putting every one in place
but if you got nervous and messed it up
it would have been okay

BECAUSE WE COULD HAVE HAD MESSY HAIR TOGETHER

and we could have had
beautiful children together
i would have been a perfect mother
to Eddie and Willie and Tad and Robert
yeah i wouldnt of let them get the fever
or smallpox or malaria

and if id been on the balcony of Fords Theater
when Mr. Booth came up with gun in hand
i wouldve put my head in front of your head
i wouldve put my head in front of your head

and heck i wouldnt have made us go to the theater
yeah we couldve stayed home and eaten dinner
and you couldve resigned the presidency
devoted the rest of your life to me

yeah we could have left oh washington forever
and we could have grown older and older together

but if id been on the balcony of Fords Theater
when Mr. Booth came up with gun in hand
i wouldve put my head in front of your head
i wouldve put my head in front of your head

 xoxo
