Swampy's "Happy Place"

When can we start talking openly about the movie so as to not spoil it for anyone?   I'll just say the casting was genius.   McCoy is by far my favorite.

I'm glad Shatner wasn't in it at all.   It'd be like your didn't-quite-get-over-him ex-husband showing up to your wedding...   Ok maybe that's just how'd it be for me.. you get the idea.

I love how they handled we TOS continuity  police.  You'll see what I mean.

Agreed. It's surprisingly good, and it managed to have its cake and eat it too -- it's exciting and contemporary enough to appeal to non-Trekkers, while still staying true enough to the source material to please most Star Trek fans. It's well made, and most importantly it's a fun adventure film, and a good example of what a summer blockbuster should be. I can't wait to see it again.

It was good clean preposterous fun. More action than sci-fi. I agree that the casting was inspired.

So you're saying that they turned it into a chick flick? *ducks and covers*

Either way, I'm still disappointed they killed the Enterprise series; I think I'll sit this movie out and wait for the next franchise thingy.

I saw it this afternoon. It was very enjoyable as a popcorn flick, and a damn fine refresh of the series. I found the third act to be somewhat contrived, and not really that much of a departure from the ending of the last couple Trek movies as far as being a big spaceship battle + fistfight. Also, time travel is just so messy. It makes everything sort of meaningless if all you have to do is survive and then go back to change time (having watched the finale of Voyager this week).

I was scared to see it, and was pleasantly surprised and very happy about how it turned out. Chekhov was adoable (great accent, even encorperated a real Russian saying *YO MA YO* which pleased me greatly), McCoy was dead on, Kirk was bloody brilliant and even Spock grew on me throughout the movie. I liked how everyone took a very different approach to their charectes, made it more interesting and realistic. I love the sections where they were kids, I loved the villain, loved the visuals. All this combined made it extremely easy to overlook its shortcummings, and there werent that many anyways. Also loved the quiky references to the old movies and series. The touching friendship development and battle for love were ace. woooooot star treck.

Abrams seems a wee bit obsessed with time travel at the moment ...

As a TNG and DS9 devotee and an absolute HATER of Voyager and Enterprise (seriously, get a life), this movie was totally fucking badass. I saw it on an IMAX screen here in Taipei and at the end, I said screw the reserved Asian thing and applauded like I was on 68th and Broadway in NYC. Fantabulosterous.

My sole complaint is that it seemed to be shooting for being a setup for a new branch of Trek canon, rather than trying to be a really interesting standalone story.

Sure, it's an interesting twist on the original Trek formula, but it'd take a TV series to really flesh out all the ramifications of what they've done to the timeline in some sort of satisfying way.
